There are some performers who, in the words of Loewe Creative Director Jonathan Anderson, are “simply larger than life.” Drag queen and actor Divine (née Harris Glenn Milstead) was one of those people, which is why Anderson wanted to honor the iconic figure for Pride month. Lauching today, the Loewe Divine collection pays homage to the campy queen with an assortment of loud fashion, accompanied by a virtual exhibition of Divine memorabilia.
Consisting of three T-shirts and a tote bag inspired by Divine’s reputation as “the filthiest person alive,” the capsule merges the performer’s provocative persona with Loewe’s minimalism. Fifteen percent of the collection’s proceeds will go to Visual Aids, an organization that supports HIV+ artists. Plus, Loewe will be making a donation to Baltimore Pride, a Black-led LGBTQ+ organization in Baltimore, Divine’s hometown and the setting for his last and most famous film Hairspray.
Originally, Anderson had planned an entire collection dedicated to the drag artist—complete with patent leather pumps and feather embellished dreses—that would “merg[e] our sense of ease and Divine’s proclivity for camp.” However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the brand to shutter production in order to protect employees and consumers. Instead, these unproduced designs will debut in the online exhibition alongside pieces from Divine’s personal archive, including his iconic white mermaid dress.
“I think it is a timely initiative, in that it is a celebration of creative freedom and challenging the world order,” Anderson said. “That’s what Divine was all about: creating his own incredible world, no matter what. Now more than ever, that’s what we all should do.”
The Loewe Divine collection and exhibition are now available online.
