No one in fashion history has made as big of an impact with as little face-time as Martin Margiela, whose birthday is today. After establishing his namesake label in 1988, Margiela proceeded to upend fashion industry norms through every facet of his business. Many of the designer’s once-radical innovations, from deconstructed tailoring to upcycled materials, are now fashion lingua franca as the Margiela archives have become a well of inspiration for young labels. What can’t be replicated, however, are the experimental and boundary-pushing catwalks that immortalized Margiela as a disruptor throughout the designer’s 20-year career. Margiela himself remained anonymous, never once making the awaited victory lap to close out his shows.
