As far as we know, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR’s series, Beauty Secrets.

“I love anything that has to do with a transformation, makeup or not,” Jimmy Tagliaferri tells CR. The beauty enthusiast and creative–they have credits as a photographer, videographer, and creative director working with brands like Opening Ceremony and Area–has taken this infatuation and applied it to high-speed YouTube videos that show their own transformation from start to finish. Displaying their self-taught makeup skills, the videos allow Tagliaferri to combine their love for beauty and their editing talents.

After graduating from the School of Visual Arts for photography and video in 2018, where they had the opportunity to work with a fashion magazine and attend New York Fashion Week, they found themselves gravitating more towards beauty. Although they’ve reserved their makeup artistry to themselves and a select few others, Tagliaferri often finds that the expertise they’re building in the beauty realm overlaps with the eye they’ve honed as a photographer. Here, the creative tells CR about those intersections, as well as what they’ve learned from other YouTubers and what fashion designers influence their work.

You’ve done editorial work on the production side as a photographer, videographer, and creative director–how does that relate to your interest in beauty?
“I’ve found that the more I do makeup, the more it has similarities to the technique that goes into editing photos on Photoshop. It’s interesting how those worlds meet and I can use my knowledge from each of those and combine them. That’s where I’ve gotten more into makeup, and that [knowledge] continues to grow.”

Are there any specific elements that carry over?
“In beauty, contour and highlight have been a trend now for awhile. That goes with photography as well, like lighting and how things are seen and everything, so that’s the main similarity. In the editing programs that I use, I constantly have to highlight certain areas and contour certain areas. It’s the same thing with the face, when you use different products and how you use [them]. Obviously everything that I’m attracted to photographing inspires me makeup-wise and beauty-wise, so it’s all under the kind of same aesthetic.”

Since you’re self-taught when it comes to makeup, have other beauty videos been an educational resource?
“I love being able to watch different people and their techniques, how they do different looks and everything. That’s the best way to learn and to teach yourself things, but also it’s a great way to communicate with other people. Seeing how others do things and then putting my own spin on it.”

Do you have any favorite beauty YouTubers?
Jefree Star is one of my favorites. For makeup technique, I really like Hrush [Achemyan]. I also watch Hindash, he does tutorials on models and different ages, skin types, and skin tones.”

What are some sources of inspiration for you?
“As far as makeup goes Pat McGrath is a huge one for me. Aside from her makeup brand, I’ve loved her style and aesthetic for so long. Other than makeup, I’m honestly inspired by neutral tones and different textures and finishes. The same goes for anything with my photo work as well, typically things I’m attracted to are those different elements.”

Are there any fashion designers that influence your work?
“I really love Tom Ford for his clothing, but also his cosmetics and skincare is amazing as well. I love all of that, especially the fragrance. As far as brands and designers go, I really like Rick Owens for the tones and textures. He uses similar tones that I tend to gravitate towards for makeup, like those earth tones, browns and neutrals. I also like Y/Project, the composition of all the designs and the different fabrics and textures. It really inspires me a lot beauty-wise, too.”

What are your current favorite products?
“Pat McGrath for the new blurring under-eye powder. It’s a super soft, fine milled powder and it doesn’t get cakey at all, which is my main thing to always avoid. I also like the Charlotte Tilbury skin perfecting micro powder. It’s similar to the Pat McGrath one, it’s super finely milled so you can add a good amount to your skin to give it that blurring effect. I use the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask as a primer. If you use a really small amount, it hydrates the skin and brings it back to life. I also love the Morphe brow gel. It’s super affordable, , and it’s the only brow gel that doesn’t flake on my face.”
