The Cannes Film Festival is the latest annual event to be canceled indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Originally scheduled for May 12 to 23, 2020, the festival will no longer descend on the South of France then, however, organizers are now deliberating how to move forward with programming. One possibility is for the festival to take place in June or July.

On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a nationwide shutdown in efforts to control the COVID-19 outbreak, ordering residents to stay home for 15 days. According to the Cannes Film Festival’s statement, it will assess the status of this year’s festival as soon as the “development of the French and international health situation will allow.”

The festival’s postponement and possible cancellation follows that of this year’s Met Gala and the CFDA Fashion Awards, as well as other music festivals, as organizations face the health and safety concerns in light of the pandemic.
