Oscar de la Renta’s White House Legacy

START

Many have tried but few designers have had a relationship with the White House like Oscar de la Renta. As a designer who was raised in the Dominican Republic, De la Renta’s success is emblematic of the American dream. Perhaps it was with this in mind, as well as his elegant and modest designs, that led First Ladies to gravitate towards his work.

In the early 1960s, De la Renta created a custom look for First Lady Jackie Kennedy for an official visit to India. This began a steady trend of De la Renta designs being worn by First Ladies for everything from state dinners to charity luncheons. Not only did De la Renta dress these influential women, but he also maintained personal relationships with many of them, too. Nearly every First Lady since Jackie O. has worn De la Renta, cementing its status as White House worthy. In honor of De la Renta’s birthday today, check out some of the most memorable looks for America’s favorite ladies by the designer who once said, “Fashion is nonpolitical and nonpartisan.”
