Even before he was the teen heartthrob on the bedroom walls of every ’90s teen, Leonardo DiCaprio began his career just like every other struggling actor—in commercials. Throughout the 1980s, TV advertisements gave young thespians an in to the industry. From Pringles to Clearasil, promoted by Brad Pitt and Mark Ruffalo respectively, companies called on new talent to face their products. Among them, then-14-year-old DiCaprio showcased his talents in a 20 second advert for Bubble Yum, a popular bubble gum with a punk duck mascot, which aired in 1988. Here, CR looks back on the commercial in honor of Bubble Gum Day.

In the clip, the actor equates Bubble Yum’s “popability” to the beating bass of an ’80s boombox. Before giving the product’s tag line, the floor-to-ceiling speakers blow up, proving that Leo has always been ready for whatever a scene calls for. While it’s been some time since DiCaprio has treated fans to a commercial appearance, it’s clear the actor had the chops for stardom even as a kid.

During his youth, the Academy Award winner was featured in a number of other TV product promotions, including Kraft and Apple Jacks. However, his performance for Bubble Yum just pops.
