Vintage Hot Air Balloon Moments

START

The idea of floating freely in the air supported solely by a balloon started as a distant dream for aeronauts attempting to crack the code of flight. In 1783, the Montgolfier brothers of France were the first to man an untethered flight by a hot air balloon contraption they fashioned from wool and straw. Soon, the hot air balloon became the talk of the world with various countries recreating the concept. It was only a year later on June 4, 1784 when Élisabeth Thible of Lyon became the first woman to free-float in a hot air balloon. The balloon itself was christened Le Gustave in honor of King Gustave III, who was visiting Lyon. The royal family of France including King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and King Gustave himself observed the voyage of Le Gustave. On the 235th anniversary of the first female flight in a hot air balloon, CR looks back at a colorful history of hot air balloons floating through blue skies all over the world.
