Vintage Moments from the Orient Express

Over the years, the Express provided a luxury travel experience for some of history’s most fascinating figures from spies and presidents, to Marlene Dietrich and Leon Trotsky. During the Belle Époque, when traveling was still dangerous, Belgian-born George Nagelmackers had the idea of combing luxury hotels and trains in a globetrotting tour of international borders. The original route of Express d’Orient first left from Paris to Vienna on June 5, 1883. The endpoints of the timetabled service was associated with Paris and Istanbul, making stops in various countries all over Europe, such as Bucharest, Vienna, Athens, Strasbourg, Milan and Venice. Today, the train is most famous as the setting for Agatha Christie’s murder mystery Murder on the Orient Express adding to the thrilling allure of the train’s reputation. On the 136th anniversary of the first trip of the Orient Express, CR dives into a visual history behind history’s most glamorous train.
