Pierre Balmain was born on May 18, 1914 in Savoie, France and was raised into the fashion world with his father in the drapery business and his mother a partial owner of a fashion boutique called Galeries Parisiennes with her sisters. Balmain was a protégé of designer Lucien Lelong, who taught Balmain how to he cut his teeth in hands-on design. Balmain then met a young Christian Dior who became a friend and future rival in fashion, before opening his eponymous Parisian house in 1945 with a cinched waist and bell-skirt silhouette that was synonymous with Dior’s post-war “New Look.” In 1994, Dominican-American designer Oscar de la Renta assumed the role of creative director at Balmain where he carried on the signature of opulent dress until his departure in 2002. Twenty-five-year old Olivier Rousteing was appointed creative director of the house in 2011, a role he continues to helm today incorporating new influences into his designs. Rousteing is credited with creating the Balmain Army, a group of his model and celebrity muses who provide inspiration marching the red carpet clad in Balmain. Celebrating Balmain’s birthday today, CR charts some of the most notable members of the Balmain Army throughout history.
