The uniform that supports brilliant performance, the athletic jersey becomes a crossroads of utility and fashion as a crucial tool for the athlete’s dream, as well as serving the fans in support of their favorite teams. As the world readies for the Women’s World Cup held in France later this year, Nike steps up to challenge the aesthetics of the traditional jersey in sport, reminding us that while the garment echoes the message of a standard unifying power during sport, that it doesn’t need to take a standard shape.
In preparation for the annual competition, Nike has teamed up with designers Yoon Ahn, Christelle Kocher, Erin Magee, and Marine Serre to transform the soccer jersey through their lens. Each with a different story and set of concepts in mind, these are the women reimagining the way we see the iconic athletic jersey.
Yoon Ahn (AMBUSH®)
“My Nike x AMBUSH® jersey is a unisex hybrid football jersey inspired by the Happi coat, a traditional Japanese straight-sleeved coat. I chose the Happi coat because, although we are celebrating the tournament and the incredible female players, I believe it is just as important for the fans, for everyone to have a universal piece to celebrate in.”
Christelle Kocher (Koché)
“The idea was to give the feeling of movement and positive energy. I created this dress by reconstructing the soccer jersey around the female body. The result is a dress that can be worn by a girl who plays, dances, or moves in the city.”
Erin Magee (MadeMe)
“I wanted this jersey to be sport first, fashion second. It’s meant to celebrate the incredible victorious history of the USWNT by drawing attention to the woman namesake of the iconic sportswear company itself: Nike the Goddess of Victory.”
Marine Serre (MARINE SERRE)
“The focus of my designs is always hybridity and adapting to daily life. It’s important to create a purposeful line that makes a female feel good without compromising the style.”
