Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.
Perhaps one of the most universally celebrated holidays is Mardi Gras—that’s French for “Fat Tuesday”—with extravagant parades and festivals occurring every year in places like Brazil, Colombia, the Netherlands, Mexico, Belgium, Sweden, and practically every other country out there. In the U.S., the holiday, which marks the period of indulgence before the ritual fasting of Ash Wednesday and the subsequent season of Lent, is almost synonymous with one city in particular: New Orleans. Fitting, as both the Louisiana city and the holiday are steeped in French history. (Mardi Gras’ introduction to North America came via French-Canadian explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville in the late 17th century.) And while Mobile, Alabama actually played host to the first official Mardi Gras jubilee in America, New Orleans continues to be the capital city for those looking to laissez les bon temps rouler, or let the good times roll—the unofficial Cajun expression that pops up around Fat Tuesday.
Religious associations notwithstanding, the celebrity sightings (Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Solange included), excessive consumption of alcohol and delectably rich cuisine, and explosion of gold-, green-, and purple-colored costumes are worth the trip to NOLA at the beginning of March. But if the sheer mention of Bourbon Street makes your skin crawl, consider an international jaunt to the various other cities around the world that partake in the joyous celebration. Wherever you go to indulge in a little shameless fun, CR has you covered on the fashion front.
