More was more tonight at Tom Ford. As CR girls, including Anok Yai, Gigi Hadid, and Joan Smalls, not to mention ’00s runway legend Mariacarla Boscono, took to the catwalk in slinky jersey gowns accented with metallic chains, buttery velvet blazers, and cotton candy-hued hats, lead makeup artist Diane Kendal wanted to emphasize the models’ eyes above all else for the beauty look.

“It’s a gorgeous, beautiful, sexy glamorous face,” she tells CR backstage. “We’re using this pencil called espresso, lining the eye up to the crease and then adding a bit of water to make it glisten. The shadow is mauve-y with a bit of pink and dark brown. Then we’re doing black very close to the eyes for definition.”

Kendal then used a cream liner close to the lashes, blending out the color and going over again with pencil for a diffused smokey eye. After piling on mascara, filling in eyebrows, and contouring cheekbones, Kendal dabbed a bit of eye gloss on top of the lids to “make it look very smoldering and sexy,” she says. The aesthetic was monotone, with all of the focus going to the eyes.

Kendal, and Ford, for that matter, are definitely no strangers to the sexy, smoldering look. Ford also referenced 1960s Edie Sedgwick and gunmetal eyes for Spring/Summer 2016, and for this time around, he put a spin on crushed velvet, faux fur pimp hats, and ’70s era silk dresses.
