Daniel Lee’s Bottega Veneta Spring 2019 campaign focuses on the shared human experience of time. It’s the first campaign realized under the creative vision of Lee, who was appointed creative director last July, and interprets time in as a moment to be captured and reflected upon. Lee frames Bottega Veneta’s Spring 2019 collection with the Neapolitan island of Ischia as the background, underscoring the brand’s Italian roots and perhaps the idea that time runs a bit more slowly when surrounded by the Mediterranean.

Taking Italian neorealist cinema as a source of inspiration, Lee’s vision and Tyrone LeBron’s photography culminate in a series of unadulterated images for the Spring 2019 campaign that reflect the sincerity expressed by such films. With this sense of cinematography in mind, the collection is presented as a type of Italian vernacular, communicating Bottega Veneta’s designs as straightforward pieces to live in day-by-day. Moreover, the diverse models featured in the campaign transform into a community rather than a cast, representing the universality that Lee sees for the brand.

In terms of fashion, it conveys a paradox of timelessness and being of-the-moment through highlighting the fashion house’s primary medium of leather. In two of the campaign images, nude-toned leather heels acts as the model’s only adornment. In another pairing, a model wearing a black leather trench coat and little else was photographed against the dimming sunset, revealing the passing of time within one context. These raw moments featured in the campaign merge Lee’s artfulness with his sense of reality, moving the brand forward under his direction while also defining its place for the current season.

After an absence from Milan Fashion Week in September, Lee will make his debut at the helm of Bottega Veneta with a collection showing in the Italian fashion capital in February.
