1970s Times Square: Peep Shows and Pimps

Now known for chains like Olive Garden and Bubba Gump, “Slime Square” was once the epicenter of pornography and prostitution. Considered the most dangerous and crime-ridden blocks in all of America, Times Square drew pimps and rampant drug use. There was even a brochure circulated for tourists encouraging them to stay off the sidewalks, opting instead for taxis. Made popular by the recent HBO show The Deuce, James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal portray 1970s 42nd Street staples, living deep in the chaos that was New York.
