Prior to his Spring/Summer 2019 runway show, Jeremy Scott shared on Instagram that the collection was influenced by polaroids of himself taken in 1996. The pictures show Scott with colorful eyeshadow, essentially smeared across his eyes, and even extending to his temples or his nose. Ironically, the models for his Spring/Summer 2019 show had bare eyes. The club kid vibe that the designer sought to channel on the runway was concentrated purely on the models’ lips, as far as makeup went.
With mostly naked faces, the only obvious makeup added to the models was shiny glitter. The no-makeup makeup look was created with a touch of MAC Studio Fix Fluid foundation to even skin tone, a dusting of MAC Bronzing Powder in Matte Bronze for warmth, and a swipe of MAC Shape and Shade Brow Tint pen to fill in brows with precision. To achieve the metallic lips, lead makeup artist Kabuki used MAC Lip Pencil in Edge to Edge, followed by MAC Duo Adhesive as glue for the rose-y pink lip foil and MAC Glitter in Pink. The foil was applied to the models’ lips using a thin layer of the adhesive and a powder brush, while glitter was used only to touch up spots that the foil missed. The pink shade worked universally for all of the models, offering a uniformity unexpected from Scott and his generally unpredictable makeup looks, especially considering the polaroids he drew on for inspiration.
Despite the makeup look for the runway being more subdued than Scott’s own experimental looks from the ‘90s, Kabuki noted that much of the spirit of the club kid culture was captured in the Spring/Summer 2019 look. “It’s club kid enough because it’s so textural and exaggerated,” Kabuki said. The pink shade, while neutral, did stand out on the models’ faces due to its shiny, reflective quality. Kabuki also addressed Scott’s polaroids saying that they reflect a time when experimentation was everything, and that that translated to the runway look, complete with neon plaids and loose-fitting dungarees. “I think that the level of impact that this foil lip has does remind me of that time when you would do crazy things like put eyelash glue on your lips,” Kabuki said.
