New York Fashion Week is in the Pocket

Put away your handbags, clutches, and totes—you won’t need them come Spring 2019. So where will you put your wallet? In the roomy pockets of your Prabal Gurung cargo pants, perhaps. And you can definitely store your keys and phone in the chest pocket of Proenza Schouler’s chicly updated safari jacket.

Yes, pockets were all over the New York Fashion Week runways and every woman who has ever had to carry anything knows just how substantial this design detail can be.

Consider Proenza Schouler, where Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough marked their return to NYFW with a gift—in the form of ruffled dresses equipped with two tiers of pockets. They were a nice add-on to the extra-extra-large acid wash denim purses. And when it came to outerwear, Proenza Schouler was all about adding on plenty of built-in pouches.

The kangaroo pocket made a loud appearance at Ralph Lauren’s 50th anniversary collection, allowing pocket lovers the rare chance to build an entire outfit around this feature. The Americana brand also released a number of throwback styles for their big anniversary, including a veritable rainbow of cargoed trousers—from leather to khaki—each with plenty of prime pocket real estate.

At Sies Marjan, storage space could be found in the many iterations of cargo pants and shorts in crisp white cotton or chartreuse silk. In fact, this style became a family affair when designer Sander Lak’s mom got in on the action, wearing a cargo skirt for her runway debut for the brand. Elsewhere in Lak’s sixth collection, excess pockets added onto a pink blazer and even tacked onto an otherwise average shirtdress.

The removable pocket was explored as an option at Matthew Adams Dolan—and offered a refined take on the ubiquitous fanny pack. The rising New York talent also delivered a chic take on utility, with button flap pockets decorating an oversized denim shirt and anointing a neon blazer with cargo-style carryalls.

Michael Kors delivered pockets full of sunshine with cheery baha hoodies and crisp khakis embellished with crystal daisies.

And even Raf Simons considered a resting place for an iPhone, serving up wetsuits equipped with slick pockets at Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, making them the most ideal layering pieces. Keep in mind, you might want to remember to remove that Apple device before adopting cues from this Jaws-themed show and jumping into the ocean.
