Ratner is one of the coolest models you may have never heard about. Discovered by a cat (more on that later), the mononymous talent has been steadily building a high fashion career, including fruitful relationships with Valentino and Chanel. You may have noticed her work with the former, as she closed the Spring/Summer 2018 show and was one of seven models to walk the Fall 2018 Haute Couture runway in a giant wig. From castings to confidence tips, Ratner lets CR into her chic life with an entertaining perspective.

Could you start by talking about your upbringing and growing up?
I grew up in Ukraine, in a small industrial city. We didn’t have technology or anything, and my friends all lived in a few houses next to each other.

How did you get your start in modeling?
When I was 15, I was too young to get a proper job, but my friend’s mom hired me to do promotional work. Their family sells expensive Maine Coon cats, and they discovered a woman who was buying one is a director for a modeling agency. So my friend’s mom asked if they wanted to see me. I was kind of discovered by a cat.

At the recent Valentino couture show, you wore one of the giant wigs. What was that process like?
It actually wasn’t as complicated as you would expect. Five wigs put into different parts of my hair created one huge wig, which was really fun. The show was so beautiful and memorable. It was true couture.

In your busy schedule, what have you found essential to your daily routine?
I take naps backstage. One time, I was sleeping under a makeup artist’s table, because it was really dark and spacious. I woke up to my agent asking where I was, so I crawled out, went to the makeup artist, and asked her to do my makeup. She had seen me getting under the table, so she looked at me and said, “Yeah…I guess.” That’s how we survive. We just take naps and eat when we can.

What are your plans between now and fashion month?
I’m moving to a different city in the beginning of August. And I love oceans, so I really hope to spend a week by the sea. But the madness of fashion week has started happening already. It feels so far away, then you wake up and you’re already running to ten castings.

Is there anything else you wanted to discuss?
I want to send a little love message to the girls who follow me. One question I get really often is how to become confident, which honestly breaks my heart, but I know where it’s coming from. And at some point, I got tired of not being confident. If I want to say something, I say something. I don’t want to hide, I don’t want to worry about what people will think. Confidence comes alongside balance and self-love, which is hard for a lot of people, but it’s definitely worth it.
