Lakeith Stanfield is no stranger to theatricality and he’s most certainly no stranger to wigs. The actor doesn’t take himself too seriously when it comes to fashion, which is why he donned a voluminous black hairdo (complete with Powerpuff Girl-style pigtails) to the BET Awards back in June and an equally quirky shaggy blonde wig while promoting his new film Sorry to Bother You at Sundance. After gaining critical acclaim for his breakout role in Short Term 12, Stanfield didn’t so much jump at the chance of fame as he stumbled into it, with the tough acting chops to back it all up. The star reportedly took a partially inebriated selfie with director Ava DuVernay during an awards brunch and she then put him in her culture-quaking film Selma. Another chance encounter with Donald Glover at a club led to Stanfield’s part in Atlanta, which then paved the way to Straight Outta Compton and Jordan Peele’s Get Out.
For a brand-new edition of CR Men Issue 7, Stanfield dabbles in the transformative powers of superstition and the like for a film entitled “Those Who Dislike Me.” All the while, he wears his familiar arsenal of brightly colored wigs and of course, isn’t afraid to let his weird side show.
“It [being called weird] implies that there is such thing as being normal and that I’m deviating from it,” he says in the new issue. “I just think we haven’t seen enough black men who express themselves in a certain way. I’m not special, I just express myself. I think if more people did that, we would see how beautiful we all can be.”
CR Men Issue 7 is available alongside CR Fashion Book Issue 13, and will be on newsstands starting September 13, 2018. To pre-order an advance copy click here, and sign up for our newsletter for exclusive stories from the new issue.
