Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.
Marfa, Texas is not an easy place to get to (it’s a three-hour drive from the nearest airport), but its remote location hasn’t deterred the influx of celebrities and influencers to travel from the world over to Instagram all that the small desert town has to offer. With a population of 1,981, Marfa makes for an unlikely place to be heralded as the art capital of the U.S., though perhaps that its main appeal—it’s attracted filmmakers, artists, and writers as far back as the ’50s, and the hype hasn’t stopped since.
Buzzy must-see destinations include the Judd and Chinati foundations, Building 98, and, of course, Prada Marfa—a permanent sculpture by Elmgreen and Dragset intended to resemble a Prada store (albeit a non-functioning one; its doors don’t open) stocked with Fall/Winter 2005 merch to send a critical message about consumerism. The installation is so popular that not even Beyonce could resist the urge to post her pose on Instagram during her visit in 2014. For yours, consider adopting a Western-inspired approach—graphic tees, cowboy boots, cut-offs, and, obviously, Prada—for a very on-theme, Instagrammable trip. Shop our packing list, below.
