Paris Fashion Week may be over, but the industry excitement is only getting started. Just eight days after showing the latest Saint Laurent collection, Anthony Vaccarello has released the brand’s first Fall 2018 campaign, starring longtime YSL favorite Betty Catroux.

Photographer David Sims last worked with the brand in December, with a spring campaign starring Kate Moss in tribute to her provocative persona and its contribution to the sexy side of Saint Laurent. This time, the photos ooze YSL’s signature modern rock aesthetic through the alluring cool of Catroux.

In addition to androgynous edge, the model’s inclusion adds a reminder of the fashion house’s heritage. Catroux started out a Chanel girl in the early sixties, but after moving on to walk for the likes of Christian Dior, her independent spirit caught the eye of Yves Saint Laurent himself. While she never formally worked for him, the two developed a close friendship full of creative inspiration. Catroux became YSL’s muse, and some even called her his twin.

Fashion has found inspiration both in the past and the present this season, and by choosing Catroux for the fall ad campaign while the likes of Kaia Gerber and Binx Walton walk the runway, Vaccarello is placing Saint Laurent within the zeitgeist. The YSL aesthetic is consistently established yet feels ahead of the curve, and featuring the iconic longtime muse allows for nostalgia and modernity all at once.
