Repetto has been mingling with the art world for decades, always working with dancers as well as spreading their ballet aesthetic to talented fans including Brigitte Bardot. Now, their high-culture status is a little more official, as their iconic Cendrillon Ballerina shoes have been acquired into the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.
Rose Repetto created the flats with Bardot, who was trained in dance, as her muse from the start. The chic chanteuse requested an everyday flat with the look and feel of a ballet shoe, and the designer happily obliged. The Cendrillon was born in 1956 and premiered in Bardot’s film Et Dieu créa la femme, starting a footwear revolution.
The shoe quickly spread to other mid-century icons like Anouk Aimée and Audrey Hepburn, and it’s easy to see why. The elegant strength of ballet has always been a cultural obsession, and Bardot aligned it with iconic French girl style by bringing it into her look. The Cendrillon and its lookalikes have become classics with their ability to look perfectly at home everywhere from the workplace to an evening event.
Today, all thanks to Repetto and our favorite French blonde bombshell, ballet flats show up in the streets as often as the studio. Karlie Kloss and Sarah Jessica Parker are fans of the trend-turned-staple, and brands from Chanel to Miu Miu have offered their own memorable renditions. Yet Repetto’s invention of the flat and iconic dancer aesthetic have cemented the brand’s synonymous position with the chic yet easygoing shoe.
“I would like to thank the MoMA curators for the unique and amazing opportunity. The recognition is another solid “step” on the plan I have for the brand in America,” said Repetto’s American CEO, Gilles Assor, of the permanent collection acquisition. MoMA’s move not only benefits the French brand, but proves the ballet flat is truly a sartorial art form thanks to its long-lasting cultural influence.
