What did we do before lipgloss? You had to make your own, probably using lip pencil and Vaseline. Back in the ’90s makeup artists had a lot less to work with, but still, they created an entire decades worth of beauty trends and countless preliminary makeup formulas that eventually landed in stores. Some of those trends and products have a bad rap—like frosted lips, frosted tips, or frosted anything, really. But then there was Bobbi Brown’s revolutionary line of chic lipstick colors, Chanel Vamp for lips and nails (predating True Blood and Vampire Diaries by 14 years), and Kate Moss’s bare face that ruled fashion at the time. With the sudden onset of ’90s mania, that all too familiar mix of bare-meets-bold beauty is making a big comeback today.

Here’s a sneak peek at Peter Philips recreation of ’90s beauty nostalgia—glossy, punkish, and a little bit wrong—captured by photographer Richard Burbridge in the upcoming issue of CR Fashion Book. Find the rest of the story on newsstands starting September 7th.
