Long regarded as a genius in the footwear industry, Manolo Blahnik’s life is being given the documentary film treatment. The upcoming feature is titled Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards, and its release date is set for September 15th of this year. The docu was masterminded by director Michael Roberts, a confidante of the fashion house and a shoe connoisseur who’s been friends with Manolo for the entirety of his career.

Blahnik first started working in fashion as a set designer, but legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland encouraged him to dedicate his efforts entirely to shoes around the year 1972. From there, he quickly secured the role of premiere footwear designer to the stars. Included in his giant client roster are Rihanna, Naomi Campbell, and Iman, all of whom appear in the film. The feature’s confirmed guest stars also include John Galliano, Charlotte Olympia, Karlie Kloss, Sofia Coppola, and many more.

The in-depth biopic promises to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the shoe designer’s magical life, starting with his youth which was spent on the Canary Islands in Spain. For Roberts, the decision to transform Manolo’s world into a feature film was an easy one. In a statement released earlier today, he went into further detail: “Having known Manolo for over 45 years, I can say he is a multifaceted intellectual and romantic whose engaging mind and ingenious work is made for entertaining cinema,” he said.

Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards is just another example of the house’s continued ability to grow and roll with the times. In January, the designer was honored with a retrospective exhibition at Palazzo Morando in Milan. The exhibition featured 212 pairs of Manolos and around 80 original hand drawn sketches.
