Tiffany Partners With The NYPD

If this headline has you conjuring bejeweled police uniforms with diamond crusted badges, know that Tiffany & Co.’s collaboration with the New York City Police Department is not like it sounds. The luxury jewelry retailer has been but one casualty on Fifth Avenue ever since the city closed down the block surrounding Trump Tower for security reasons.

To circumvent this issue, and what is presumed to result in a steep drop in holiday sales, Tiffany has partnered with the city on a set of barricades, draped in branded Robin’s egg blue covers, to lead customers into its store. Tiffany’s own bellhops are stationed along the way to usher in anyone who’s on their way in to shop.

WWD reports that the New York flagship accounts for 10% of its global sales. In an earlier statement, the company responded to the issue of its unfortunate proximity to Trump Tower: “Tiffany is in frequent communication with the New York Police Department and U.S. Secret Service regarding safety and security along the perimeter of our Fifth Avenue flagship. We remain open for business with regular hours and welcome customers to enter the store via our 57th Street entrance if any barricades along Fifth Avenue are in place. Our flagship store windows, which feature sparkling scenes of New York City at the holidays, are now on display for all to see. Our facade has also been illuminated as planned.”

This avenue boasts the most expensive retail rent in the world, and there’s no doubt that other retailers have been similarly affected by the decreased foot traffic during what is always a busy shopping period. Gucci is practically located inside of Trump Tower. Hopefully, Kanye West and Anna Winter did their due diligence by picking up some holiday gifts after their meetings yesterday with the President-elect.
