As New York Fashion Week nears, media coverage has zoned-in on the apparent demise of the city’s schedule. Designers have been weighing up whether to stay stateside or defect to Paris. As it stands today, the current number of leavers stands at four; Altuzarra, Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, and Thom Browne will all be noticeably absent from this September’s proceedings in Manhattan. Among those choosing to return or remain, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, Rihanna, and now reportedly Yeezy are the most major name draws on the diminished Spring 2018 calendar.
While details have yet to be formally confirmed by Kanye West, sources close to the rapper slash designer say that he has been vying for an official spot on the NYFW schedule for his sixth Adidas-backed Yeezy collection. Last season, West initially elected to show outside of the official schedule before moving his collection’s debut by two hours to bypass conflict with other designers.
Historically, no Yeezy show has ever been without controversy. The spectacle that was Season 3 at Madison Square Garden doubled as Kanye’s album release party to rave reviews. Season 4 fared less favorably with the press; models fainted while standing for hours outside at Roosevelt Island. Season 5 swung the pendulum back in West’s favor. A noticeably more subdued showing at Pier 59 Studios allowed the collection itself to shine through. If Kanye does confirm his presence in New York in September, it will his sixth Yeezy collection to show in the city.
