Stella McCartney continues to find new ways to keep her fashion house sustainable. Today, the brand announced a new partnership with Bolt Threads, a bio-tech company that prides itself on creating renewable, raw materials for the textile industry. McCartney is no stranger to eco-friendly products. In June, the brand joined forces with Parley for the Oceans and vowed to utilize an innovative yarn made from waste plastic in its upcoming collections.

The textile industry has been notoriously slow in its progression towards environmentalism. Many fabrics produced include an array of petrochemicals, which are both harmful to the environment and the wearer. For McCartney, the new partnership with Bolt Threads extends beyond professional purpose. In a press release that went out today, the designer explains her world-friendly mission in more detail. “This is something that I’ve been personally on a journey to find for much of my career and I just feel like there is finally a new opportunity to bring so many industries together and for them to all work as one for a better planet,” she said. “It is a truly modern and mindful approach to fashion. The industry has so much heritage, but at times it can be damaging to the environment and it can also drag you in a backwards direction and for me I always want to move forward in fashion and this is truly a moment to celebrate technology and the future of fashion.”

With the creative help of McCartney, Bolt Threads has created a high-quality silk using yeast. Solution-based, the innovative new fabric helps to reduce pollution and—true McCartney’s brand ethos—is vegan-friendly and 100% cruelty-free.
