When Carine traveled to Harbor Island to shoot a Solid & Striped swim campaign with a roster of top models, their beach pics nearly broke the Internet, or at the very least gave everyone severe FOMO.
Among the group of pretty young things was one of Carine’s longtime favorites Carolyn Murphy, who has nearly two decades in fashion under her belt still maintains a robust modeling portfolio at 44. She’s part of a corps of ’90s supermodels who, decades later, still continue to turn heads. Last season, she walked the runway at Tom Ford and Atelier Versace; she’s been the face of Estée Lauder for over 15 years, she was on three major magazine covers in 2017, and she appeared both Alberta Ferretti and Miu Miu’s Spring 2017 campaign.
I’LL GET THIS QUESTION OUT OF THE WAY, SINCE I’M SURE EVERYONE ASKS: HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU STILL LOOK SO AMAZING, HEALTHY, AND YOUNG?
“Hah! I’m Benjamin Button and secretly bottling the fountain of youth! Just kidding; thank you for the compliment. There is no secret other than genetics and taking good care of myself 80% of the time. I also like to have fun—a little naughtiness never hurt anyone.”
WHY DO YOU THINK THAT YOUR MODELING CAREER IN PARTICULAR HAS HAD SUCH LONGEVITY?
“I’m not sure really, other than I genuinely love what I do and love the people I work with.”
WHAT HAS MADE YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO MODEL?
“Besides the people, travel, and money, I thrive on the creativity. I need the stimulation and inspiration, otherwise I would be bored.”
YOU’VE ALSO TAKEN ON SOME NEW ROLES IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY—CAN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH SHINOLA OR ANY OTHER PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE IN THE WORKS?
“My role with Shinola is to consult on creative an design, women’s in particular but I’ve also been developing a quarterly magazine with them as well. It’s not fashion related, more journalism surrounding the cultural landscape of America.”
ARE YOU LOOKING TO DO MORE CREATIVE DIRECTION?
I love working on creative direction and hope to do more of it with other brands, but also have been creating my own platform. Very excited for the fall, when I will launch and announce my “secret project.’”
AND THEN THERE’S YOU MOST IMPORTANT ROLE OF ALL—HOW DO YOU BALANCE MOTHERHOOD WITH THIS LINE OF WORK?
“The balance of motherhood and work is exhausting, but I’m not the anomaly here! Thankfully, I am the daughter of a bohemian mother and military father, so I naturally desire structure on a overall basis and know when to be spontaneous too.”
DO YOU THINK THAT YOUR WORK ETHIC HAS RUBBED OFF ON YOUR DAUGHTER OR DOES SHE WISH YOU WERE HOME MORE? (ALSO ASKING FOR MY FUTURE DAUGHTER HERE!)
“My daughter wishes I were home less! She not only traveled with me when she was younger, but I bowed out of work for a spell to focus on motherhood and often turn work down. Being a single mom is tough, but living in New York has allowed me to do it all in one place, for the most part.”
SHE’S ALMOST AT THE AGE WHERE SHE COULD START A MODELING CAREER OF HER OWN. HAS SHE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN THAT OR IS SHE PURSUING OTHER OPTIONS?
“There was a short while where she expressed interest, but she learned very quickly that this industry is not all glamour and fun. Plus, she has the time to explore, be a teenager, and take advantage of the opportunity in me affording her a good education.”
IF YOU HAD IT YOUR WAY, WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND THE MAJORITY OF YOUR TIME DOING?
“I’m lucky that I really do spend the majority of my time doing what I love, but if I had to be honest, I’d spend more time in nature. City life is just not for me!”
IS THERE ANOTHER CAREER PATH THAT YOU THINK YOU COULD HAVE GONE DOWN?
“I’m heading that way—doing more art and writing. I could have done the acting, but was content with my job as a model. Aside from all of that, maybe I would have been a naturalist and anthropologist.”
BEING IN A SWIM CAMPAIGN WITH A BUNCH OF YOUNGER MODELS: FUN OR NOT FUN? (CAN YOU GIVE US A FUN MEMORY FROM THAT SOLID & STRIPED SHOOT?)
“Oh my gosh—so fun! Seriously, the majority of them are half my age, so to be in their company was an honor for one but, also, they are just a great bunch of professional, yet lighthearted people. Being around those bodies would give anyone the kick in the ass to start working out again, myself included.”
