Earlier today Karl Lagerfeld transformed Paris’ Grand Palais into Data Center Chanel to fete a tech-themed collection, made up of some 80-plus looks. Kicking off the show were two alien robots dressed in coordinating Chanel tweed suits and matching white Daft Punk-esque heads. In the black suit was the house’s longtime fit model Amanda Sanchez and in the white was Brazilian model Cris Herrmann, who also closed the show. We spoke to 26-year old Cris before the whole affair wrapped to talk about her opportunity to walk the runway as a Chanel bot.

When did you find out that you would be opening the show as a robot?

“I had been doing the fittings for the collection with Karl and he kept telling me that Amanda and I would open the show as robots. I thought it sounded pretty fun!”

Were you nervous to wear the robot helmut?

“Yes, I was. The head of the robot was a little claustrophobic and I didn’t have much time to change out of it and into my second look. I really wanted to succeed and do everything in the right. I was really happy that everything went to plan in the end and was even happier that I got to close the show too—that was unplanned and a complete surprise for me.”

What’s your favorite thing about working with Karl?

“Working with him is one of the best opportunities a model could ever ask for. He is such an amazing person and creator. I did a shoot with him a long time ago that I consider my first big break.”

What are the beauty secrets of a Chanel-bot?

“Never, ever brush your hair!”

How were you first discovered?

“I was discovered in by a model scout on a scooter when I was 13 in my hometown of Crissiumal in Brazil. He kept in contact with me for three years until I was ready to try modelling and then he took me to São Paulo and introduced me to a model agency.”
Which model to you admire the most?

“Kate Moss.”

What is the best modeling advice you’ve been given?

“Always be determined and have patience.”

What would people be most surprised to know about you?

“Probably that I have a very normal life outside of my work as a model. I love doing really boring things like cleaning my house!”

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

“I see myself living in the countryside, growing my own vegetables, and traveling around the world making photo documentaries.”

What’s next?

“Many things in different ways—life is exciting.”
