Plenty of kids grew up being teased for having freckles. But now, a healthy spray of natural spots has become a desirable status symbol for models—a unique trait that sets you apart. Just ask London-born It girl Adwoa Aboah, who has absolutely been dominating the runway and editorial scene lately, and is now busy promoting her film debut alongside Scarlett Johansson (not too shabby) in Ghost in the Shell. In addition to her badass attitude and shaved head, what’s made Aboah stand out is her speckles. Following in her path is one of our favorite newcomers Aleece Wilson, whose Instagram handle is @oddfreckles. During her first-ever fashion month, Wilson made a memorable impression at major shows including: Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Fenty x Puma, Margiela, and Yeezy Season 5. Since then, the fan art has started pouring in, with many of her followers sketching Wilson’s distinctive, spotted face.
But when it comes to impressive freckles, the new girl on the block topping every model fanatic’s hot list is Sara Grace Wallerstedt, who caught the eye of Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons at Calvin Klein. The up-and-coming Texan teenager has been kept somewhat under wraps by her agency, making exclusive appearances only at top-tier shows, so stay alert for her next move.
The movement towards connecting the dots doesn’t stop at standard-size models. Thanks to her halo of red curls and fantastic freckles, Swedish stunner Sabina Karlsson has become one of the most in-demand curve models today. Salem Mitchell, a social media star with almost 85k Instagram followers, initially got negative attention for her “banana” spots, which helped her recently land a modeling contract with Ford.
One of the more mind-blowing trends to take the beauty world by storm this past year has been the rise of faux freckles. Some women have gone as far as getting an artistic dappling of semi-permanent tattoos, dubbed “rainbow freckles,” while others are exploring a more temporary route with products like the “Freckle Pencil” or sheets of ‘freckles’ that can be applied at home. Backstage before the Fall ’17 Maison Martin Margiela show, makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath gave models a sun-kissed look by painting on subtle specks, which officially confirmed that freckles are the new beauty marks for 2017.
