Brandon Maxwell Throws the Chicest Fashion Shows

The location was New York’s storied Russian Tea Room and there were chilled vodka shots lined up along the downstairs bar when we arrived. Upstairs, the lightbulbs cast a golden glow over the scene: Steven Klein fed his baby a bottle while carrying it up and down the carpeted runway, deep in conversation with Naomi Campbell, and a pant-less Lady Gaga blew kisses to Carine. After about ten minutes the crowd came to a natural hush. We were ready for Brandon Maxwell’s Spring 2017 show to begin.
Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” kicked off the soundtrack and it felt like a happy moment to be an actual woman because Maxwell makes the kind of clothes that we want to wear—again and again. In the extravagant setting, the collection pulsed with elegant, old-school glamour, but when considered outside of it, each piece also felt sleek, modern, and very now.
Imaan Hammam was the first down the runway, dressed in a monochrome three-piece evening suit the lightest shade of blush pink and from there the looks flipped between a steady palette of that tone to all-cream, all-black, all-olive, and back again. The silhouettes were crisp and powerful and piped details pulled many of the looks together. On some it was used to draw in the waist of a jumpsuit, on others, it was brought together in a heavy ruffle to accentuate the back of a dress.
Before the designer appeared to take a bow, the models danced their way through the final runway lap. Taylor Hill beamed from ear-to-ear, Sasha Luss threw her hands in the hair, and Riley Montana gave an energetic twirl. Everyone was touched by the energy of Maxwell—and everyone was feeling it.
