Twenty one year-old Elisa Johnson is the youngest daughter of American basketball legend, Magic Johnson. Elisa was adopted when she was just three days old and is the sister to two brothers, one of whom stars in the reality T.V. series Rich Kids of Beverly Hills. (He is also featured in our most recent CRIssue 8 story documenting the next generation of iconic American families.) Johnson has recently swapped her West Coast area code for an East Coast one and has her sights set on being the next Johnson to see their name in lights. How will she do it? Her strategy is to combine her three greatest passions—singing, shopping, and social media—and a careful documentation of her every move for her 173K-plus Instagram following. In a quick chat, the star-to-be shares dreams for the future, and her secret to capturing the perfect Insta photo:

How would you describe your childhood?

“I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. My parents adopted me when I was three days old, but I never felt out of place growing up. I was completely immersed in the L.A. lifestyle for all of my childhood and teenage years: shopping, eating on Sunset Boulevard, occasional trips to Malibu, and hanging out with all my closest friends. Now, I’m living in Manhattan and I love it because everything is so much more accessible.”

What was it like growing up in a famous family?

“I always struggle with this question because, to me, I had a totally normal upbringing—my dad was just my dad. The only difference was that people would come up to us a lot and ask for photos, or we would need security for certain trips. As a young girl I was proud because I thought my dad was a super hero, but as I got older I started to realize who he really was and it made me gain an even greater appreciation for him.”

Do you feel a responsibility to act a certain way because of your background?

“I always keep in mind the repercussions of my actions and try to maintain a respectful and positive image for myself and for my father. He has always emphasized living a life of utmost integrity and I try to abide by that same lifestyle. That being said, I’ve been known to word-vomit and say things that I probably shouldn’t, but you live and you learn!”

What are your career goals?

“I want to make a name for myself in the fashion and entertainment worlds. A major goal of mine is to have my own sunglasses line as they’re kind of my signature piece. I’ve also always wanted to be a performer slash singer. That’s my greatest passion, but I do worry about how harsh the industry can be.”

What do you like to do in your spare time?

“In my spare time I love to watch murder mystery shows with my friends, spend some quality time at Barney’s, and search the city high and low for the perfect Instagram photo. People say I take Instagram too seriously, but I don’t care. I have a responsibility to the people that follow me, so I work hard to create content that they’ll enjoy seeing.”

How would you describe your personal style?

“I would describe my style as both street and luxury. I love to mix and match labels and find innovative ways to style pieces. My favorite designers—if I had to pick—are Alexander Wang and Saint Laurent.”

What’s your best beauty trick?

“My most essential beauty trick is a BeautyBlender sponge. Every woman and queen who uses makeup needs one. Without it, my life (and face) would be incomplete.”

What do you do to stay healthy?

“Truthfully, I don’t do much. My favorite meal is a hamburger and fries and I love In and Out Burger. So far I’m just lucky that Mother Nature has blessed me with a super fast metabolism. I do plan on signing up to an Equinox Gym at some point in the near future though.”

What does being an American girl mean to you?

“To me the American girl embodies diversity and a belief that she can conquer anything that comes her way.”

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

“In ten years I hope I’ve established myself in my career and that I’ve made my mark on the world in a positive way. It’s really important to me to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, so I hope I’ll be able to help educate people about it. The biggest stigma with my age group is that people believe that it can’t happen to them, which couldn’t be more untrue. ”
