Never Before Seen Diane Arbus Photographs

Diane Arbus was one of the most seminal artists of 20th century, her candid portraits of marginalized people were trailblazing. She was active from 1956 until her suicide in 1971, at the time it was highly taboo to document subjects like transgender people, drag queens, dwarves, nudists, and gay men. Arbus would often find her subjects walking the streets of New York; she would frequently wander around Central Park and Washington Square. The Lévy Gorvy Gallery’s new exhibition Diane Arbus: In The Park is a survey of her photographic adventures in both public spaces. The works included span her brief career, showing the evolution of her photographic practice and providing vignettes into the rarely seen underworld of New York City. Some of the photographs in the show are famous Arbus works, several of the images exhibited have never been seen by the public.

The show will be on view from May 2 until June 24 at Lévy Gorvy Gallery, 909 Madison Ave.
