For Michel Gaubert, sound is a sensory overload, sprinting twice yearly across four style capitals to oversee the music direction of catwalk shows in New York, London, Paris, and Milan, with clients including Balenciaga, Chanel, Gucci, Fendi, Jil Sander, Diane von Furstenberg and Roberto Cavalli – his energy and unnervingly cool taste having become as essential to the fashion industry as Bill Cunningham is to street style. Having survived the crazy hedonism of legendary Paris club Le Palace, back in the ’70s and ’80s (the French version of Studio 54) the soundtrack master now spends his days discovering and listening to music in-between his other big passion in life: his ever-popular Instagram account, that turned him into an inspirational social media phenom. We caught up with the fashion insider to talk guilty pleasures, becoming the prime minister of France for a day, and dancing in the shower:
How were you introduced to music?
“Music introduced itself to me when I was very young, it became my best friend.”
When you began DJ’ing at Le Palace in Paris, it was during the club’s most hedonistic time, what are your earliest memories from that experience, or should I say, do you remember that time at all?!
“It is all a blur, but is it was all there, the drugs, the sex and the glamour! The glamour was my favourite part.”
What song best describes your work ethic then and now?
“The Pleasure Principle.”
Choose one song that always makes your heart skip a beat?
“Taana Gardner / Heartbeat.”
How many times a week do you dance in the shower?
“I strut my stuff everyday!”
What’s the worst chat-up line you’ve received in a club?
“Play Kylie Minogue if you want to see me dance!”
Other than music, what’s your biggest passion in life?
“Image.”
On a scale from 1 to 10, how intolerable do you find Kim Kardashian’s images on Instagram?
“It depends on my mood. I can go from mild to wild.”
Name one guilty pleasure you can’t seem to quit?
“TMZ!”
What’s the best thing a taxi driver has ever said to you?
“In 1978 in New York, when I said I was going to Studio 54, the taxi asked me if I wanted to buy acid or Quaaludes.”
When you’re driving yourself, what do you think about when you’re alone in the car?
“Having the freedom to go anywhere I want to.”
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever had to do for money?
“Nothing is bad when it is for the money.”
What would you do if you were the French Prime Minister for a day?
“Offer a 50% discount in all the fashion stores.”
And talking of fashion, who do you wear?
“Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garcons, Vintage Showroom, Sacai, Raf Simons, Stefano Pilati.”
Have you ever made a fashion faux-pas?
“It was not a faux pas. It was a contrepied with Jeremy Scott.”
Who are your personal heroes?
“Andy Warhol, Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Luc Godard, Serge Gainsbourg.”
Are you a risk taker or do you play it safe in life?
“Risky Business.”
What do you worry about and why?
“I used to worry. Now I don’t.”
Best and worst qualities?
“Reliable, honest, sincere —messy and lazy at times.”
What is the most important relationship in your life?
“My partner Ryan Aguilar.”

“Where the heart is.”
Are you a collector and what do you collect?
“Yes. I collect records, CD’s clothes, books, magazines, porcelains, computers and cats.”
What do think cats dream about?
“Croquettes.”
What are your favorite Parisian discoveries?
“I want to keep them secret!”
Building you’d like to buy and live in?
“The Eiffel Tower, to have Paris at my feet.”
If you could say anything to anyone, who would it be and what would you say?
“Our lips are sealed.”

“Politeness should always be de rigueur.”
