As a pop culture icon, Pharrell Williams has made his mark not in a singular way, but across various platforms for his talent. His impact on music, fashion, art, and design is the subject of his second, newly released book Pharrell: A Fish Doesn’t Know It’s Wet. The volume comes to life through 250 photos and illustrations, as well as commentary from friends and collaborators including Karl Lagerfeld, Janelle Monáe, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Oprah Winfrey, among others.

Pharrell: A Fish Doesn’t Know It’s Wet invites the reader to witness the artist’s creative journey and the people he’s encountered along the way. While most can already recognize his upbeat sound, like on his viral track “Happy,” the book brings his visual language to the forefront. Rooted in hip-hop and street style, the images create an utterly cool and relevant catalog of his collaborations and creations. For one, it takes the reader behind-the-scenes of a life-size cast of Williams’s body, for which Williams had to stand for three hours to complete the mold. The work, titled The Future Pharrell, was created by Daniel Arsham and depicts Williams in a Billionaire Boys Club jacket–Williams’ own clothing line–with his hands in prayer. It isn’t the only sculpture of Williams included in the pages.

Along with visual art, the book details William’s forays into the fashion industry with projects for Chanel, Moncler, Moynat, and Adidas, as well as his primary role as creator of the clothing lines Billionaire Boys Club and Icecream. These are presented as look books and conversations. In an intimate interview with Karl Lagerfeld accompanied by images of Williams wearing the storied brand, Williams questions the designer about fashion, family, and the future. A section of the tome is also dedicated to editorials in which Williams has been featured, highlighting his own fresh sense of style.

Pharrell: A Fish Doesn’t Know It’s Wet is now available online.
