Fetty Wap for CR Men’s Book

At last night’s VMA Awards artist Willie Maxwell, better known as Fetty Wap, took home the prize for Artist to Watch. It was his hit track “Trap Queen,” which is perhaps the most unorthodox version of a love song that you’ll ever hear, that got him there. But as the 25 year-old recording artist pointed out to The Cut last week, it’s a genuine one. The chart topping track is about his girlfriend who learned to cook crack so well that she made enough for them to share. You might not be able to relate to that particular kind of romance, but there isn’t anyone left in the world who can resist singing along to Fetty Wap’s most well-known hit. “Everybody doesn’t have the same trap queen,” he says as he tries to explain his song’s meaning in laymen’s terms. “Everyone can have their own trap queen. There is the way I use it in the song, but my mom is a trap queen. She held us down and she was a queen at doing it. She took care of her children and her tribe, made sure we had food on the table, and kept our heads up. However you want to put it, there are different meanings to it.”

Today, exclusively on The Cut and here at CR, we’ve released this outtake from our Kanye West appointed portfolio featuring his favorite new talent in the music industry. Here’s our sitting with Fetty Wap—our Yeezy-clad “Trap King,” if you will—from the first issue of CR Men’s Book.
