Beyond The Trend: Boxer Shorts

While a popular unisex style today, boxer shorts have a traditionally masculine history. Full-cut undershorts originally gained popularity when military officers integrated the garment into their peacetime wardrobes after World War I. The style was then adapted into the sporting arena in 1925 when Jacob Golomb, the founder of boxing brand Everlast, began to make some alterations to the restrictive trunks and tights being worn by the fighters of the day. When famed heavyweight boxers Bob Fitzsimmons and Jim Corbett swapped out the old for the new, boxer shorts began to be mass-produced for consumers, however, it wasn’t until World War II that the loose fitting boxer shorts became widely accepted as an undergarment norm. Towards the end of the 20th century, boxers became associated with ’90s hip hop style, when the branded waistband became a status symbol of sorts. No longer were boxers a mere functional garment, but a sartorial element worn by men and women alike. Today, boxer shorts continue to be spotted on the runways, in films, and worn by the influential at home. Click through as CR unpacks the garment’s varied history.
