Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.
Ah, the Fourth of July: BBQs, parades, concerts, fireworks, picnics, and, if you’re Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss, inflatable waterslides that are most definitely for adults and not children. While Independence Day often requires nothing more than a backyard, a few friends, and a grill, the patriotic holiday is a great excuse to get the heck out of the city and make a beeline (“beeline” being the Long Island Railroad, or if you’re so inclined, the good old-fashioned Jitney) to the charming, untainted beaches of Southampton.
The tiny Long Island town, which is made up of several different villages and hamlets including Quogue, Sag Harbor, and Bridgehampton, is just a stone’s throw from New York City. Oft considered to be a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan (and a scenic oasis for the monied set), Southampton is home—at least for the summer—for celebrities like Calvin Klein, Tory Burch, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Lopez, and Christie Brinkley, to name just a few. Jackson Pollock, Roy Litchenstein, and Tom Wolfe have also called the seaside town home. But there’s more to the Hamptons than just impeccable mansions, pristine pools, and flagrant displays of wealth. From art galleries and hiking trails to seaside watering holes and seven-plus miles of shoreline largely devoid of people, consider Southampton for your Fourth of July destination, and shop CR’s picks, below, to do so in style.
