Now Casting: Richie Beras

One year ago, Richie Beras was living in the Dominican Republic with dreams of making it big as a professional model. When she answered a small casting call in her hometown of Santo Domingo soon after, those dreams finally became a reality. A scout from IMG Models was present, and she instantly recognized Beras’ model potential. Beras was soon signed with agency and flown to Europe where she was booked as an exclusive for Versace for Fall 2017 in London and Milan. At the time, she had no idea who Donatella Versace or anyone else for that matter was, but the risk paid off and IMG’s phone began ringing with more requests for the young up-and-comer. Beras has yet to land a major fashion campaign or walk the runway in America, but we’ve got a hunch that’s all about to change very soon. Here’s Richie:

Tell us about your upbringing?
“I’m from Dominican Republic and I grew up in Santo Domingo, which is the capital. It was good, but there’s not much money in the Dominican Republic, so it was a little bit hard too.”

How were you discovered?
“I was living in Santo Domingo when I got discovered and I was already signed to a Dominican modeling agency. My manager there told me to go to a casting and when I got there, I met an agent from IMG Models. Out of 34 girls at the casting, only two of us signed contracts with IMG.”

How did your family react when they heard your news?
“They were surprised, but happy. This is my dream.”

Growing up, were you always interested in fashion?
“No. When I first began modeling, I thought fashion was prissy. I like to be natural, so I didn’t get it. However, when I started to see it as a business, everything changed and I became interested.”

What’s your favorite place in the world?
“I think New York is my favorite place because it’s beautiful and in the night it becomes really fun and awesome.”

What’s been your favorite modeling moment to date?
“All of the jobs I’ve done so far have been fun. As a model, it’s really important to have a good attitude in general because interacting with clients and making them happy is the key to them booking me again.”

How would you describe your personal style?
“When I signed with IMG, they changed my personal style a lot. I used to dress sexier, but I like the new me. They cut my hair and told me to dress more like a tomboy. My style was definitely more feminine before. Everything used to be naked!”

Do you have any favorite beauty tricks?
“I think about my hair a lot. I’m black, but not all black girls have curly hair. I have to wash it everyday and then comb lots of conditioner through it. My favorite one is a special homemade one that my mom makes.”

What do you think sets you apart from other models?
“It’s not that I don’t care about my career, because I do, but I think I have a healthy perspective on the industry and handling rejection. If a client or brand doesn’t chose for a job, maybe it’s just not my time. Everyone has set backs and I don’t have time to be stressed out about everything.”

What do you hope to achieve as a model?
“I just want to be known and respected and be able to provide a good life for my family.”
