5 Ways to Train Like an Angel

You’ve probably wondered about who’s responsible for the toned bodies on the runway at the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. You can stalk the Angels on Instagram for as long as you want, but we happen to know that their go-to is ex-New York City Ballet dancer Mary Helen Bowers and her dance-inspired fitness program called Ballet Beautiful. We can even recall bumping into Bowers post-show to hear her proudly say things like, “Did you see Doutzen’s ass?!” Because she’s the one who has helped to sculpt it.

The results speak for themselves when you can see how perfectly fit Gigi Hadid and Lily Aldridge are—they were training with Mary Helen in Paris earlier today. Unlike other routines, Bowers’ focuses on working out what she calls the small “ballet muscles” to the point of exhaustion, so women who rely on their figures for a living don’t run the risk of bulking up or building muscles where they don’t need it. In advance of tomorrow’s VS Runway Show in Paris, we got the rundown on how to train like an angel—Ballet Beautiful-style—when things are down to the wire.

1. MAKE FITNESS A LIFESTYLE

“The Angels workout all year long, making exercise a regular part of their daily lives. Be it online Ballet Beautiful workouts, hiking or swimming in the summer or private lessons in our Soho studio, one secret to staying fit is doing something every day to make exercise a part of everyday life.”

2. SET A GOAL

“There’s nothing as rewarding as working towards and achieving a goal! I can’t think of anything more motivating than prepping for an event like the Victoria’s Secret Show where you entire body is on display for an audience of millions. Envision your outfit, the big day, or whatever your event is—and picture yourself there looking and feeling your absolute best. Hold tight to that image when you are training to stay focused and on track.”

3. STEP IT UP

“The Angels train all year long, but in the final weeks and days leading up to the show, they never lose a chance to workout. Whether it’s waking up early to train or adding on extra time and intensity to each workout, those last days before the show are the time to give it your all and really make it count! I love adding in extra standing work, pliés and lunges—and even adding on ankle weights to add a deeper burn.”

4. TWO A DAYS

“The final week or two before the show many of the girls train twice a day. Working out in the morning and again in the evening gives us time each day for both Ballet Beautiful cardio and toning and works wonders for kicking the metabolism into high gear.”

5. SHOW OFF AND HAVE FUN

“The Victoria’s Secret Show is the biggest, wildest fashion show of the year. After all that hard work the Angels get out there, have a blast and show it all off!”
