Spanish house Loewe has collaborated with Sotheby’s to present its latest Weaves collection that explores artisan-crafted objects including artist-embellished Galician chestnut roasters, woven leather bags, baskets, and accessories.

Sotheby’s will exhibit a selection of seven artist-embellished chestnut roasters featuring experimental weaving techniques by artists Arko, Min Chen, and Laia Arqueros. The main protagonist in the collection is the Chestnut roaster from Galicia, a handmade clay pot with punctured holes. The texture of the holes create is an ideal display of different weaving techniques.

Three artists featured in the exhibition have reimagined the pots created by a famous potmaster Anotonio Pereira. The pieces will be displayed alongside the pieces of Sotheby’s marquee May auctions of Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary Art in New York.

The additional 84 chestnut roasters were given to artisans Idoia Cuesta and Belen Martinez from Spain and to artisans in Loewe’s own ateliers to create new experimental items. The artisans have experimented with the holes, braiding or passing through with strips of fabrics, ribbons, rope, leather strings, and wool threads. Many of the materials on the roasters were used from the past Loewe collections. The recrafted roasters, as well as reimagined items from the past collections, such as the classical Balloon bag and Elephant bag, will be available for sale at Loewe stores worldwide.

The exhibition opens with its pieces available for purchase May 1st, 2021 on Sothebys.com.
