Combining a timeles accessory, the pearl necklace, with Comme des Garçons signature renegade style, Rei Kawakubo unveiled the luxury brand’s first fine jewelry collaboration earlier today in Paris. Teaming up with Mikimoto, the Japanese jewelry brand credited as the originator of cultured pearls, the designer created seven pearl necklaces that combines CDG’s subversive spirit with the tradition and craftsmanship of the storied jeweler. The pieces will officially launch in Comme des Garçons stores and Kawakubo’s Dover Street Market locations mid-February.

The necklaces mark the first chapter in a two-year partnership between Comme des Garçons and Mikimoto. Presenting the highest standard of both Japanese ateliers, the minimalist chainlink and pearl pieces are constructed from sterling silver and White South Sea or Akoya Mikimoto pearls. Kawakubo’s vision for the unisex collection was guided by the idea of adorning men in pearls and “refraining a little from design.”

“Pearls line up alongside diamonds in terms of value,” Kawakubo said. “…If we talk about women’s jewelry, one usually thought of pearls.” And while they capture the classic essence of Jackie Kennedy and Coco Chanel’s favorite accessory, the Mikimoto Comme des Garçons pearls give a modern update to the idea of traditional strands. Substantial chains juxtapose the line of soft-white gems, adding a point of contrast and tension familiar to Kawakubo’s approach to design.

The Mikimoto Comme des Garcçons collection will be available in Comme des Garçons, Dover Street Market, and Mikimoto flagship stores.
