London-based vintage and haute couture dealer William Vintage has launched a collaboration with popular online luxury fashion mecca MatchesFashion.com, which is online as of today. The collection, which is the e-commerce site’s first official foray into the world of vintage, features 28 pieces spanning over 50 years of fashion history from the 1950s to 2000s. Some notable highlights include a 1991 Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking three piece suit, a 1955 Christian Dior London gold sequin embellished La Mexico dress, and the white, dragon buckle cut-out gown seen during the finale at Tom Ford’s final collection for Gucci in 2004. Designers in the ready-to-wear edit include Versace, Givenchy by Alexander McQueen, and Hermès, while Givenchy, Jacques Heim, Norman Norell are represented in the haute couture selection.
Marie Blanchet, CEO of William Vintage, combed countless private collections across the globe throughout the curation process. She cites the original Yves Saint Laurent Saharienne jacket with matching trousers as her rarest find of all. “The last one I saw sold in an auction in France last year for €30,000, and almost every set in the world is either in a private collection or museum,” Blanchet tells CR. “So when a friend of mine showed this set to me a few months ago, I could not believe it.”
Fashion and buying director at MatchesFashion.com, Natalie Kingham, has a soft spot for the collection’s pieces from both the ’50s and ’70s: specifically, the Saint Laurent safari collection and kaftans, and also the classic Dior silhouette, which was popularized by old Hollywood icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Ava Gardner. “They really evoke the mood of that time and still feel so incredibly relevant now,” Kingham says.
Each featured piece is one-of-a-kind, and completely restored to museum-quality condition by William Vintage’s team of highly-skilled couturiers. Prices in the collection range from £825 to £25,000 (0 to ,850), with sizing from UK 4 to 12. More pieces will drop on MatchesFashion.com in the coming months.
