The Fashion Calendar Gets Another Dropout

Last week Gucci announced that it would be combining its menswear and womenswear shows and now Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School are also following suit. WWD has reported that the brand is rethinking the way it shows and sells its collection. Starting as soon as this year, Public School will unify its womens and mens into two seasonal shows to be aligned with the pre-collection calendar—meaning that Spring will show in December and Pre-fall and Fall in June. During the traditionally scheduled Fashion Weeks, the brand will concentrate its energy and budget on consumer-focused projects.

“Showing twice a year with both mens and womens in one show will allow us to really develop our ideas cohesively throughout the year and subsequently slow the entire process down,” said Chow to the outlet. “We can actually enjoy our collections as opposed to being tied to the calendar.”

The news comes a string of similar announcements from other major fashion houses and ties into a larger conversation about how the pressure of the fashion calendar can put restraints on a designer’s creativity. Some of the upsides to Public School’s new show format are that it will allow designers more time to create and will lead to a smaller window of time for mass market corporations to copy the designers. In an industry where hungry retailers can bypass the need for fashion on an artistic level, Chow and Osborne’s proposal seems like it could be a profitable, long-term solution.
