Thousands of people have mobilized in the past week, showing solidarity with the memory of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement, and Black communities across the country. Protests and demonstrations have been held in 140 cities across America following Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
In this time of civic unrest, many have stepped up to support the cause, from fundraising to marching in the streets. A number of celebrities have participated in these grassroots efforts, including The Weekend, who has donated 0,000 to several organizations in support of racial equality. The CR MEN star pledged 0,000 to Black Lives Matter Global Network, 0,000 to Know Your Rights Camp Legal Defense initiative, and 0,000 to National Bail Out.
The police have reacted to the demonstrations with great force, using tear gas, batons, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, and thousands of protestors have been arrested. Donations to organizations like those that The Weekend contributed to provide critical resources for those on the frontlines of the fight for racial equality. Bail funds provide aid to those arrested while protesting, while other non-profits may supply legal aid or assist with medical fees.
As many wonder how they can help in this time of civic unrest, donating any amount of money to organizations helping Black communities is a simple and direct way to aid in affecting change.
