Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed earlier today that she partnered with Netflix to film the 34-city book tour for her memoir, Becoming. The documentary of the same name focuses not only on the intimate interactions between Obama and the public while on tour, but also many of the anecdotes mentioned throughout the book. With a directorial debut for filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, Becoming is set to release on the streaming service May 6.

“Those months I spent traveling—meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe—drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with,” Obama said. “In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams.”

Offering insight into the deeply personal nature of the film, Obama also noted that those moments of connection she experienced on tour are more important to her now than ever in light of the coronavirus pandemic and the “loss, confusion, and uncertainty” it has brought.

The film will be the latest to hit the platform from the Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, which has a partnership with Netflix and is slated to release a number of movies, documentaries, and series.
