The role of a scream queen in cinema is more than a woman who shrieks loudly into the camera before meeting a gruesome death. Not only is the scream queen title bestowed upon someone with a serious pair of lungs, but it’s also typically given to the role of the “final girl,” the single heroine who manages to make it to the end of the movie alive (and often appears in the sequel, too). Over the course of cinematic history, as the horror genre has gained traction, the recognition of scream queens has been popularized and even satirized (read: meme-ified) in popular culture.
