This week marks the one year anniversary of Beyonce’s epic visual album, Lemonade. The album has continued to have a cultural impact for 12 months straight; just last week it won a Peabody Award for its cinematic sensibilities. To commemorate the special anniversary, Bey has launched a women-only scholarship program aptly called Formation Scholars.
On her website, the singer explained that she set up the scholarship to “encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident.” The fund is intended for female students pursuing creative arts, music, literature, or African-American studies at four selected institutions.
The awards will be put towards the 2017-2018 academic year and are available to hopeful students applying to Berklee College of Music, Parson’s School of Design, Howard University, and Spelman College. The first two schools are geared towards the arts and the latter two are historically prolific in African-American studies. Bey hasn’t confirmed exactly how much money the fund will provide, but doubtless her initiative is a great opportunity for young women who may not otherwise be able to afford to pay college tuition.
