Is Drake Returning to TV Screens in 2018?

Drake’s musical genius is indisputable, but don’t let it be forgotten that his first 15-minutes of fame came courtesy of a starring role in Canadian television show, Degrassi: The Next Generation in the early 2000s. Today, rumors have surfaced that he’s returning to the profession that gave him his start with a new acting role on the gritty British TV drama, Top Boy. According to the show’s lead actor, Ashely Walters, producers are dreaming up the perfect role for Drake, which will require him to temporarily relocate to the U.K. as the series is set in a fictional housing estate in East London.

Speaking in an interview with British paper The Mirror, Walters said: “We met up to start talking about the show and we are working out a role for him.” He added that Drake “loves acting” and “of course, wanted a part.” “He’s going to be really hands on and is getting stuck into it,” Walters said to end the interview.

Reportedly, the rapper has been a die-hard fan of Top Boy since it first aired in 2011 and is rumored to have purchased the rights to the show after the initial series dropped on Channel 4. The show’s premise is centered around two rival gangs and their involvement in drug-related crimes. In an interview with radio host DJ Zane Lowe last year, fellow rapper Skepta revealed that he would star alongside Drake on the show. Although concrete details remain mysterious, Skepta said that the pair were “making greatness” with the show’s “creative direction.”

The news should come as no real surprise to Drake fans: Earlier this year he announced plans to revive his acting career following the end of his Boy Meets World Tour, which just wrapped recently. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, he said: “Acting is another thing that I just can’t wait to really dive into. I think after I release More Life, which is this playlist I’m working on, and finish this tour, I think I’m going to really start to position myself in the acting world and, hopefully, take some great roles.”

No premiere date has been confirmed, but it’s rumored that the next series of Top Boy will drop on Netflix at some point during 2018.
