Capes Dominated the Oscars 2020 Red Carpet

Not all superheroes wear capes—but their names might be embroidered in them, which is exactly what Natalie Portman did at tonight’s Oscars ceremony. The actress sent a sartorial salute to female directors who were snubbed at the notoriously white-washed and male-dominated event by inscribing their names into her Dior Haute Couture cape. Among them were HustlersLorene Scafaria, Little Women‘s Greta Gerwig, and Queen & Slim‘s Melina Matsoukas. (This year, not one woman was nominated for the coveted Best Director award.)

Portman, who previously won an Oscar for her performance in Black Swan and was nominated for her roles in Closer and Jackie, wasn’t the only one who was feeling a cape tonight (though hers certainly made the biggest statement). Brie Larson, one of the night’s presenters, dazzled in champagne-colored in Celine. Elsewhere, Maya Rudolph sported a half-cape in a burnt-orange sequined Valentino caftan (with purple eyeshadow, no less), and Olivia Colman accented her velvet, midnight-blue Stella McCartney gown with a white cape.

Rounding out the trend was Janelle Monáe, who performed a crowd-pleasing rendition of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” in a very OTT Midsommar floral cape. A queen, indeed.
