Your Favorite Beauty Products Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good

Washes, lotions, and creams come in contact with the most intimate parts of our bodies—which is why the results of a new report on chemical side effects is incredibly alarming. According to findings from J.A.M.A. Internal Medicine, there was a 78% jump in negative beauty product side effects in 2015, and a 300% increase in 2016. The report also counted 5,144 adverse incidents from faulty cosmetics between 2004 and 2016.
The shocking data suggests that the massive increase in complaints was due to the poor quality of widely sold hair care brand Wen. After some further digging by the F.D.A., it appears that Wen has received 21,000 complaints (and counting) relating hair lose and scalp irritation. Reporting these incidents to the F.D.A. isn’t mandatory and, in most cases, dissatisfied consumers will complain directly to the manufacturer instead of the government organization. This means that the F.D.A.’s complaint count isn’t a realistic reflection of how many users are actually being harmed.
New products don’t have to get F.D.A. approval to come to market, so companies essentially have carte blanche to put whatever they want into them. The only products that require approval are those that contain over-the-counter drugs and color additives. In other words, the beauty industry is self-regulated in the sense that companies don’t want to incite consumer complaints, but also don’t have to disclose the potential harm of the ingredients that they use.
Compounding the danger, counterfeit beauty products are on the rise. Most often these are faux-fragrances pretending to be from major name brands. Lab tests have shown that bootleg perfume often includes cyanide, rat droppings, and urine. Fake cosmetics like eyeliner, mascara, and foundation have shown mercury, arsenic, and lead to be present too. In 2015, the government seized fake personal care products amounting to a monetary value of million.
To protect yourself from counterfeits or products with harmful side-effects, always shop at reputable retailers, check the labels, and seek out natural alternatives where possible.
